Some of the developers behind 2018’s critically acclaimed platformer Celeste have announced a new indie game studio Extremely OK Games (@exok_games).

Abbreviated to EXOK, Matt Thorson (@MattThorson) announced the new studio in a blog post on the studio’s shiny new site.

“The success of Celeste has allowed us to set up a lot of things that will make our work better, faster, easier, and more fun,” Thornson wrote.

Thorson’s previous studio label Matt Makes Games will be retired. It will still be listed as the developer and publisher of their first two projects Towerfall Ascension and Celeste but going forward all of their games will be under Extremely OK Games.

“I started Matt Makes Games when I was working solo in my parents' basement, and I never thought I'd be working with such an amazing team on games of this scale, Thorson said. “Forming EXOK has also conveniently allowed us to restructure things in a more equitable fashion, so that we can all share ownership over our collective efforts.”

The team is also proud to announce they’ve “imported” part of the Celeste and Towerfall Ascension development team to Canada from São Paulo, Brazil. Artist and programmer Pedro Medeiros (@saint11), artist Amora Bettany (@amorab) and office manager and business developer Heidy Motta (@heidy_km) will be joining the rest of the Extremely OK Games team at their new Vancouver studio.

The team will be working on a new project codenamed EXOK1. “We're excited to share more about it when the time is right,” Thorson said. “Right now we're still in a very exploratory phase of development, sussing out what this thing wants to be.”

Until then you can sign up for the studio’s new mailing list to stay up to date on announcements.
