Different Games Toronto Conference This Weekend

A reminder that Different Games Toronto is this weekend.  Here is a press release:

“In an industry often known for using tired tropes for it’s lack of diversity, independent videogame creators are leading a rebellion, by creating games that are like nothing you’ve ever seen. This June 2-3, join us at OCAD University to play them for yourself at the first ever Different Games Toronto conference and exhibition.

For four years, the Brooklyn based Different Games Collective has been the creative and critical voices of marginalized game developers and critics at its annual Different Games Conference. Showcasing groundbreaking playable works of art and design alongside
cutting edge speakers this pioneering conference has become known for turning the typical video games expo on its head with radical and experimental answers to the games industry’s dominant paradigm. This year we’re joining forces with members of Toronto’s indie games scene to bring a revolutionary program of games and speakers to 49 McCaul Street.

“Even though Canada, and Toronto in particular, is a major player in the world of game design, it hosts very few gaming-focused festivals. And even fewer that focus on diversity and inclusion” said Toronto based game developer and Different Games Collective member Yifat Shaik, “Different Games is an opportunity to support and grow a vital part of our creative communities”

The conference will feature luminaries from Toronto’s game scene, including games from diverse local talent incubator Dames Making Games and OCAD’s own Dr. Emma Westecott, Assistant Professor of Game Design and Director of the University’s Game Play Lab.
