Vote For 'Legacy of the Copper Skies' On Square-Enix Collective

Indie developer Horrible Unicorn Game Studios is fairly new, starting in late 2014, is looking to Square Enix Collective to help get their game Legacy of the Copper Skies funded. The action adventure game is inspired by the likes of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and The Lost Vikings.

"Legacy of the Copper Skies is a classic action adventure game set in both the dark, industrial world of Grimstad and the lush, verdant Ebura. Players must take control of both Tir and Isen and use their unique gameplay mechanics to explore, solve puzzles, and fight in order to save their worlds from annihilation."

Toronto Media Arts Center: Game Developers At Bento Miso

As you (hopefully) know, the Toronto Media Arts Center is going through some issues with their new space. I thought I would take a moment and link to the different game developers that use Bento Miso (one of the members of TMAC, and would of used the new space).  The names are links to their Twitter page. Helping TMAC means you're helping Toronto's indie game developer scene, and specifically these developers.

Toronto Media Arts Center Event: Consultation Meeting (Tell The City You're Pissed)

I written about what is happening with the Toronto Media Arts Center before. Tonight is actually the first opportunity the community has to tell the city how they feel about it.  There are a lot of great organizations that can use this center, especially Dames Making Games, and Bento Miso who are doing great work for the Toronto Game Developer scene.

You have to register for the event, which you can do so here. There is also a handy infographic here. If you can't make the event, you can contact your local city councillor with a letter.

Developer Mark Media Adds Laurinda Shaver as Creative Digital Kids Producer

Mark Media released a press release last week announcing they have brought on Laruinda Shaver to help out with Miaomiao, their iOS apps and TV shows that help teach Chinese and English to preschool children.  Check out the full Press Release below, I've also added a trailer for one of their apps.

Fun new iOS app for kids! In this fun, interactive story, join Miaomiao and her friends on an adventure to find the stolen dumplings and save Chinese New Year. Narrated text with lots of interactivity, great mini-games and opportunities to learn simple Mandarin vocabulary.

"Mark Media Adds Laurinda Shaver as Creative Digital Kids Producer

TORONTO – June 15, 2015 – Digital media prodco, Mark Media, is pleased to welcome Laurinda Shaver, former Digital Strategist at Pearson Canada, to the team as Creative Digital Kids Producer. Having managed digital media and television projects at major networks such as CBC, YTV, and Rogers TV, including FIFA World Cup, Sochi Olympics and over 550 hours of original Canadian children’s programming, Shaver will lead the development and production of kids’ digital media products including apps, online content, and other interactive learning experiences. “Laurinda brings a breadth of experience spanning digital media, television, and educational spaces,” said Mark Media CEO Jason Loftus. “It’s the perfect mix for our growing studio that works across these platforms. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Laurinda to our team.” Shaver’s role will start with a focus on Mark Media’s preschool property Miaomiao, a collection of iOS apps and CG-animated TV episodes that aim to teach Chinese and English language skills to children through friendship and play. “I am really excited to join this talented team of artists, animators and programmers,” said Shaver. “It is thrilling to work with a company that shares my passion for storytelling and love of the digital medium.” She and the Miaomiao digital team are working on the upcoming iOS app release Fun with Colors, an ocean-themed interactive experience teaching color themes in both English and Mandarin. In addition, the Mark Media team is simultaneously completing post-production on 30 x 7 minutes of its CG animated series Miaomiao, distributed globally by Brain Power Studio. E3: Over 20 Minutes Of 'Below'

Capybara Games appeared on IGN's E3 show to play a little bit of Below, their upcoming PC and Xbox One adventure roguelike game.  The game will also feature music from Jim Guthrie, who worked on one of their previous titles Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.

Checkout the gameplay video below. Sadly the audio is really quiet, if IGN reposts it I'll be sure to make the change:

Toronto Media Arts Needs Our Help - Dispute With Urbancorp

The Toronto Media Arts Center was planning on moving into a new development sometime this year. However due to some shady dealings from the City of Toronto, and Urbancorp this is in jeopardy of happening.  I won't be able to put it in words better than the TMAC and DMG have already, so I'll post them below. The important thing is they need our help.  And we can help by going to the events below:

TMAC Info Session Monday, June 22, 6 p.m. Bento Miso Collaborative Workspace 862 Richmond St. W. at Strachan

City Planning Consulation Meeting for 36 Lisgar St Thursday, June 25, 6:30 p.m. Parkdale Library (1303 Queen St. W.

Below is a excerpt from the Toronto Media Arts Center's open letter, which you can read in full here.

"Despite a fully executed purchase agreement that obligated Urbancorp to build and deliver this space to TMAC, Urbancorp failed to complete work and close on the property by its deadline. With construction nearly done, and TMAC agreeable, there was no reason for Urbancorp not to extend this date in order to give itself time to complete the work and close the transaction. Intead, the City of Toronto directed Urbancorp to allow the date to pass, apparently because it intended to hand the facility over to real estate developer Artscape in the final hour. The role of the City was to facilitate the agreement and ensure Urbancorp delivered on its promises to the community and TMAC. That it failed to do so demonstrates not only bad faith but also a gross breach of community trust."

Below is the full FaceBook post from the Dames Making Games account, which you can also read here:

"Dames Making Games is a member of the Toronto Media Arts Centre, the charity arts organization set to operate a new 38,000 sq. ft. facility in West Queen West. We were planning to move in to our new space -- featuring our own permanent gallery, office, and classroom space -- in mid-to-late 2015.

As a community-based, member-run, collaborative arts non-profit, we believe our future is as part of a cluster of likeminded media arts organizations in an affordable, purpose-built facility that allows the public and artists to engage with us and our members' work fully.

But the developer has defaulted on its obligations to complete work on the building, allowing a key deadline to slip by, causing TMAC's purchase agreement to be terminated. These actions have devastating consequences for the Centre, as it has raised nearly $1 million in public funding and done a tremendous amount of work designing and planning the facility and its inaugural year of programming over the last 4 years. For the past few months, DMG co-director Jennie Faber has been directly involved with transition, governance, and financial planning for TMAC.

This outrageous turn of events also has disastrous consequences for the members of TMAC -- including DMG -- whose operational and financial sustainability, project pipelines and ability to plan for the future have been severely compromised.

There are also deep implications for the whole non-profit arts community in Toronto if it turns out a legal agreement with the City cannot be relied on. Why would arts funders support Section 37 community benefit projects ever again if this can happen?

TMAC has been forced to defend its rights by taking legal action against the developer, Urbancorp, and the City of Toronto. It's a shame that this is where our energy must be spent now instead of continuing to plot our launch party and commissioning strange new games for the 200-seat cinema and adjoining art park.

So, how can you help?

1. Please read and share this open letter widely:
http://tomediaarts.org/open-letter/

2. If you are in Toronto, plan on attending the TMAC Info Session on Monday, June 22 where TMAC will share more information about how and where you can make your voice heard on this issue.

Make sure to follow TMAC on Twitter. See you Monday.

E3: Toronto Game Developers Written About In Toronto Star

Toronto Star reporter Michael Robinson wrote about some local developers who are currently showcasing their games at E3.  XMG Studios, 13AM Games, Metanet Software, and Benjamin Rivers discuss a little bit about their game, as well as their favourite video game character. Obiously 13AM Games have the correct answer in Sonic.

Make sure to check out the article on the Toronto Star here. Michael reached out to me and I helped him out with this article so it's worth sharing with everyone :)

E3: N++ Is Close - New Video Posted

Developer Metanet Software is going through certification right now with N++ on PS4.  They are also at E3 showing off N++.  But they did go ahead and release another video of their upcoming platformer, further confirming that I will be dying a lot in this game.

E3: Studio MDHR Shows Off Cuphead - Delays Until 2016

I'm constantly finding out about new game developers in Toronto. My favourite is when I see a trailer and go "wow this game looks amazing" and then find out it is being developed right here in Toronto. This is exactly what I thought when I saw Cuphead from Studio MDHR whose developers call home in Oakville, and Regina.

"Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional cel animation (hand drawn & hand inked!), watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or co-op) as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets. Cuphead is all action, all the time."

Cuphead was previously announced for 2015 but has been delayed until 2016 so they can make the game better: "With Microsoft helping us out, we are able to push the art further, refine the mechanics more, and deliver the Cuphead game we’ve always dreamed of".  Check out the trailer and screenshots below!

Developer Metanet Software has opened up a Google survey to complete for a chance to be in the N++ Beta.

"We’re doing a private Beta Test with a small group of players, to make sure the N++ server (that handles level-sharing and highscores) is ready for launch — and we’re running a Contesque to help choose our testers. If you have a PS4 and an SCEA account, you could be one of those lucky people."
